Home Quality Mark

Home quality mark was introduced as a replacement scheme for the previous code for sustainable homes assessment that ran until 2013-2014. A number of the main points of code were then subsequently integrated into the existing regulations and some even got their own (Part Q). The remainder of the Code items were expanded upon and new sustainable metrics were then introduced to create the now known home quality mark, with the key focus of the new assessment being, (the needs and expectations of people living in the home). As it stands the HQM has come out of its beta format and is in full release meaning it could be fully adopted by local authorities.

The home quality mark (HQM) is an independently assessed certificate scheme-like code whereby local authorities could request as part of their planning permission that the development of houses achieves a minimum score. Again similar to the code for sustainable homes scheme.

HQM has three key metrics, My Costs, My Wellbeing, and My Footprint, which can all be ranked on a scale between 0 – 5. The overall score is then displayed as a star system with 5 stars being ‘Outstanding’

The goal and the overall value of HQM is to allow developers to differentiate their houses from others and provide the potential purchase a number of benefits including:

1.      Large health and wellbeing

2.      Low costs to run their property

3.      Reduced carbon footprint
